The diorama of the Kauner valley glacier, painted for the 1893 Chicago world's
fair. From the collection of Willi Pechtl.

Diemer's glacier panorama (1893) is proof of his talent.

Even as an art student in Munich, Michael Zeno Diemer (1867 - 1939) maintained close ties with Tyrol. In 1893 he painted a diorama of a glacier for the World's Fair in Chicago. He was the natural choice for the contract to create "The Battle of Bergisel" although he was only 27 years old at the time. Diemer specialized in panoramic images and aerial views. A pilot in the First World War, he did not live to see the catastrophic consequences of the National Socialist ideology he had embraced in the 1920's.
