Great sadness in Tyrol: the destruction of the Hofer memorial in 1961.

The giant bronze statue of Andreas Hofer on Bergisel was designed by Heinrich Natter and dedicated in 1893. A memorial wreath is laid at the base of the monument every year on February 20, the anniversary of Hofer's execution in Mantua. Unknown perpetrators blew up the statue during the night of October 1, 1961 - just one of a series of violent crimes in connection with the unresolved problem of South Tyrol.
